What happened
During the final approach phase at Reggio Calabria Airport, an aircraft struck a concrete wall situated by the Agata River canal. The impact occurred when the right main landing gear made contact with the structure due to insufficient altitude. Following this collision, the flight continued toward the runway, but the right main gear collapsed upon touchdown. The subsequent loss of control led to a crash landing on runway 15, during which the aircraft's tail section was severed from the fuselage.
The accident resulted in one fatality and nine serious injuries among those on board.
Findings
Investigations into the incident identified that the flight crew utilized an incorrect approach configuration, allowing the plane to descend below the established glide path. Additionally, there was a lack of effective flight supervision from the instructor, who was positioned in the jumpseat during the approach.
