Trike aircraft veers off runway during landing at Cromer Airfield

Casualties unknown • Cromer Airfield, Norfolk, GB

A Gemini Flash IIA aircraft veered off a grass runway and tipped onto its side during a landing at Cromer Airfield, resulting in damage to the airframe.

What happened

On 31 July 2011, a Gemini Flash IIA, registration G-MVGM, was conducting a private flight when it returned to Cromer Airfield in Norfolk. The landing was performed on the grass Runway 22 and was initially described as smooth. However, as the aircraft's speed decreased, the trike began to veer toward the left.

In an attempt to correct this movement, the pilot took action that triggered an oscillation. This caused the aircraft to tip onto its left side and nose at an estimated speed of 10 to 15 mph. Despite the impact, there were no injuries to the pilot or the single passenger on board, both of whom were wearing appropriate safety harnesses and helmets.

The investigation

The AAIB investigation was based on the accident report submitted by the pilot and subsequent enquiries. The aircraft sustained damage to the keel tube in the wing, the control bar, the monopole, the right wing, and the pod.

During the examination of the aircraft, no specific pre-existing mechanical failures were identified. However, investigators noted that general levels of wear on the components may have played a role in the occurrence.

Probable cause

The aircraft veered left during the landing roll and subsequently tipped onto its side due to corrective actions taken by the pilot during a period of low airspeed.
