Aircraft accident during approach at Arauca

6 fatalities • Villavicencio, Colombia • Landing (descent or approach)

An aircraft experienced a loss of altitude and subsequent crash following an engine feathering instruction during its final approach to runway 22 at Arauca.

What happened

Following a series of flights involving Paz de Ariporo and Tame, the aircraft arrived at Arauca (AUC) where maintenance crews identified a leak in the left main gear hydraulic system caused by a split hose. Although the component was replaced prior to a scheduled departure for Cúcuta, complications arose shortly after takeoff. Approximately five minutes into the flight, the crew detected smoke and a burning odor within the cockpit. During this period, it became apparent that the landing gear remained in the extended position, despite the cockpit indicators suggesting otherwise.

In response to these issues, the crew decided to divert the flight to Villavicencio. Before attempting a landing, the pilot performed two low-altitude passes over the airfield to consult with the airline's instructor and the chief of maintenance regarding the situation. During the final approach to runway 22, following instructions from the ground-based instructor, the pilot proceeded to feather the number one engine as a precautionary step. After crossing the runway threshold at a low altitude, the pilot reapplied power; however, the aircraft entered a slow left turn, lost necessary altitude, and crashed into flames.

Findings

  • The crew performed an engine feathering maneuver on the number one engine following ground instructions during the final approach phase.
  • The aircraft experienced a loss of altitude and subsequent impact after power was reapplied following the engine feathering procedure.

Probable cause

The aircraft lost altitude and crashed after the pilot feathered the number one engine during a low-altitude final approach.
