An IL-12 crashed during a local training flight near Buguruslan-Baymakovo Airport after stalling during a single-engine climb, killing all four crew members.

What happened

The incident occurred while a crew of four, comprising one instructor and three pilots, was conducting a local training exercise at Buguruslan-Baymakovo Airport. After completing the initial phase of their training program at an altitude of 1,000 meters, the instructor directed the aircraft to return to the airfield. During the final approach segment, the instructor initiated a go-around maneuver and increased power on both engines.

As the aircraft began its initial climb, reaching a height of approximately 150 meters, the instructor shut down the right engine and feathered its propeller. Simultaneously, the aircraft banked left to an angle of 30 degrees. This action caused the airframe to stall, resulting in a dive into the ground. The impact destroyed the IL-12 and triggered a post-crash fire that consumed the wreckage. All four individuals on board were killed in the accident.

Findings

The official investigation concluded that the crash resulted from a stall during the initial climb phase. This loss of lift was attributed to the combination of flaps being deployed at 17 degrees and the reduction of power on the right engine. At the time of the stall, the aircraft was too close to the ground for any recovery maneuver to be successful.

The report noted that the instructor’s decision to perform a single-engine climb-out violated the NPP-47 training program and specific instructions published for the IL-12. Additionally, the remaining crew members misinterpreted the situation, which contributed to the loss of control. Contributory factors included a lack of appropriate measures regarding pilot management and training, as well as insufficient oversight and demands placed on flight crews.
