What happened
During a scheduled delivery flight originating from Moscow and traveling toward Irkutsk, an aircraft made several planned stops at Sverdlovsk and Novosibirsk. While performing the final approach into Irkutsk-Intl Airport, the crew encountered difficult weather conditions. During this phase of flight, the aircraft type struck the ground approximately 1,315 meters before reaching the runway. The impact caused the plane to bounce, subsequently striking a fence. The aircraft eventually came to a stop in a prairie area located 550 meters before the runway threshold.
The accident resulted in one fatality, involving the copilot, and four injuries among the other occupants. Due to the extent of the impact, the airframe was determined to be a total loss and was not repairable.
Findings
Investigations into the accident identified several contributing elements related to cockpit operations. It was determined that the flight engineer had misread certain instrument settings and did not communicate this information to the flying crew in a timely manner. Additionally, poor coordination between the pilots was noted as a significant factor in the sequence of events leading to the crash.
