Cessna 402B veers off runway at Maiquetía due to brake failure

Casualties unknown • VE

A private Cessna 402B veered off the runway at Simón Bolívar International Airport after the pilot experienced brake failure during landing.

What happened

On June 29, 2012, a Cessna 402B, registration YV2080, was performing a maintenance ferry flight from Oscar Machado Zuloaga Airport (SVCS) to Simón Bolívar International Airport (SVMI) in Maiquetía. The aircraft was operating under a Special Airworthiness Certificate for the purpose of being transported to an Approved Maintenance Organization.

During the landing phase at Maiquetía, after touchdown and while traversing the runway near intersection "D", the pilot detected that the brakes were non-responsive. To prevent further uncontrolled movement on the active runway, the pilot intentionally maneuvered the aircraft toward the left safety area. The excursion resulted in the aircraft leaving the paved surface, but no injuries were sustained by the two crew members, and the aircraft sustained no damage.

Probable cause

The primary cause of the runway excursion was a failure in the aircraft's braking system during the landing roll.
