What happened
On October 31, 2021, at approximately 21:00 UTC, an ultralight aircraft, registration LV-X120, was conducting a recreational flight in the San Javier area of Misiones province. While performing an approach to an unprepared field, the pilot encountered overhead cables that were not visible during the descent. In an attempt to maneuver the aircraft to avoid these obstacles, the pilot lost control of the aircraft, causing the right wing to strike a road sign located near Provincial Route 1.
The investigation
The investigation focused on the flight path and the environmental conditions at the time of the incident. It was established that the aircraft was operating under visual flight rules for pleasure purposes. The investigation examined the sequence of maneuvers performed by the pilot during the final phase of the approach and the presence of the obstacles in the flight path.
Findings
- The primary cause of the accident was the unintentional impact with a road sign following an evasive maneuver.
- The pilot's attempt to avoid previously undetected cables led to a loss of control.
- The aircraft was operating in an unprepared landing area, which contributed to the complexity of the approach.
