What happened
On November 27, 2025, a Cessna 188 was performing a test flight from a prepared grass airstrip located in Bragado, Buenos Aires province. During the takeoff phase of the operation, the aircraft experienced a powerplant failure or malfunction. As the pilot attempted to maintain the climb, the loss of engine power prevented the aircraft from sustaining its ascent. The aircraft subsequently impacted the ground at a low speed, traveling approximately 40 meters from the point of departure. The impact resulted in substantial damage to the airframe, including the partial detachment of one wing and the separation of the left landing gear from the cabin.
The investigation
Preliminary investigation by the JST focused on the mechanical failure of the Lycoming IO-550-D engine. Investigators examined the aircraft's maintenance records, noting that the maintenance documentation was not current at the time of the accident. The investigation also assessed the flight conditions, which were characterized by daylight, VMC (Visual Meteorological Conditions), and calm winds of approximately 2 knots. The aircraft, registration N86448, was being operated for non-commercial, unscheduled test flight purposes.
Findings
- The primary cause of the accident was a powerplant failure or malfunction during the critical takeoff phase.
- The aircraft sustained substantial structural damage, specifically involving the landing gear and wing components.
- Maintenance documentation for the aircraft was found to be not current.
