What happened
On May 14, 2018, a Cessna A-182-J, registration LV-CNC, was performing a ferry flight from Cañada Quiróz to San Fernando. The flight was intended to transport the aircraft to a repair shop for necessary maintenance. After completing the first leg to Corrientes and refueling, the aircraft departed for Paraná. During the cruise phase of this second leg, the pilot identified a fuel loss in the right wing tank. The pilot promptly executed a precautionary landing at General San Martín International Airport in Resistencia, Chutigui, with no injuries to the pilot or the accompanying passenger.
The investigation
Investigators examined the aircraft upon its arrival at Resistencia. Blue-colored fuel stains were observed trailing from the right wing area along the fuselage toward the tail. Laboratory analysis of fuel samples from both the left and right tanks revealed that the Avgas 100LL was contaminated with automotive gasoline (super).
Upon further inspection, the fuel cells were removed for examination. The investigation established that the right fuel cell was in a state of disrepair, featuring detached seams and a supply spike that did not meet design specifications. Additionally, a non-aviation grade sealant had been used on the rear supply spike, suggesting a prior attempt at an improper repair. The investigation also noted that the fuel cells had remained dry for approximately two years, which likely contributed to the deterioration of the components.
