What happened
On September 22, 2018, a Cessna 150 M, registration LV-FKV, was conducting a flight instruction session near Marcos Paz, Buenos Aires. The flight, which originated from Morón aerodrome, involved an instructor and a student pilot performing various maneuvers and simulated emergency practices.
During the final stages of a simulated emergency landing maneuver, the crew applied power to climb away from the terrain. During this transition, the aircraft experienced a sudden loss of control. The aircraft's right wing struck the ground first, followed by a second impact, resulting in significant damage to the airframe, engine, and propeller. Both occupants sustained minor injuries.
The investigation
The investigation examined the aircraft's mechanical condition, the meteorological environment, and the operational procedures in place at the time of the accident. Investigators analyzed satellite imagery and radar data from the Ezeiza station, which indicated a cold front moving through the region.
Technical inspections of the Cessna 150 M ruled out any pre-existing mechanical failures. The investigation also focused on the functionality of the Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT), noting that while the device had activated, the signal was not received by the Argentine Mission Control Center (ARMCC).
