What happened
On June 28, 2023, at 19:20 UTC, a Piper PA-A-34-200T, registration LV-MPO, was performing a general aviation flight departing from Córdoba International Airport (Ing. Ambrosio Taravella). While the aircraft was in the climb phase of its flight, the crew encountered a loss of engine oil. Due to this mechanical malfunction, the pilot was forced to execute an emergency landing back at the departure aerodrome.
There were no fatalities or serious injuries reported during the incident, though one person on board sustained minor injuries.
The investigation
The investigation was conducted by the Dirección Nacional de Investigación de Sucesos Aeronáumenticos (DNISAE). The inquiry focused on a documentary review of the event, following the established procedures for civil aviation accident and incident investigations. The investigation examined the technical failure of the engine group and the subsequent flight maneuvers required to return to the airport.
Findings
- The primary cause of the emergency landing was a malfunction or failure within the engine group, specifically characterized by a loss of oil.
- The incident occurred at an altitude of approximately 4,000 feet during the ascent phase.
- The investigation concluded that the findings did not contain significant elements that would necessitate new safety recommendations or changes to national operational safety standards.
