What happened
On August 7, 2024, at approximately 20:30 UTC, a Cessna 182-G (registration LV-IHU) was conducting a general aviation pleasure flight over the Chapelco mountain range near San Martín de los Andes, Neuquén. While cruising, the pilot experienced a noticeable loss of engine power. In response to the mechanical issue, the pilot executed an emergency landing on the slope of the Chapelco mountain range.
The investigation
The preliminary investigation by the JST focused on the circumstances surrounding the engine failure and the subsequent landing. The aircraft was operating under Visual Meteorological Conditions (VMC) on a flight path originating from and returning to San Martín de los Andes (SAZY). The investigation established that the aircraft sustained substantial damage during the impact with the terrain. While the aircraft was occupied by a total of three people, including the pilot and two passengers, there were no fatalities or serious injuries reported; however, one person sustained minor injuries.
Findings
- The primary factor leading to the emergency landing was a loss of engine power during the cruise phase of flight.
- The pilot successfully identified the power loss and transitioned to an emergency descent and landing procedure.
- The landing occurred on the slope of the Chapelco mountain range, resulting in significant damage to the airframe.
