Accident Overview
On August 2, 2007, at 18:15 local time, a Corvus Corone MK II ultralight aircraft, registration HA-YCAH, crashed near Bugacpusztaháza, Hungary. The aircraft was operated by Corvus Aircraft Kft. and leased by Air-Hungary Kft. The flight was a sightseeing ride for a passenger shortly before sunset. After taking off, the aircraft performed maneuvers and then entered a steep dive, impacting the ground. The aircraft was destroyed, and both occupants died.
Investigation
The Hungarian Transportation Safety Bureau (KBSZ) conducted the investigation. The wreckage was recovered and reassembled in a hangar. Experts from the Budapest University of Technology and Economics, the Mechanical Engineering and Automation College of Kecskemét, and the Institute of Forensic Science provided technical analyses. The investigation examined design and manufacturing aspects, including the main spar and wing skin separation, adhesive properties, and material characteristics.
Findings
The aircraft was a modified version of the Corvus Corone MK I, intended to comply with ultralight weight and speed limits. However, the modified aircraft exceeded those limits, as noted in the technical findings (Section 2.2.1). The investigation did not specify a single probable cause but identified that the aircraft did not meet the required specifications for ultralight category aircraft.
Conclusion
The accident resulted in the complete destruction of the aircraft and fatal injuries to both occupants. The investigation report was finalized on October 21, 2008, with contributions from the aircraft manufacturer and other involved parties.
