Accident Summary
On May 28, 2022, at 15:58 local time, a parachutist using a PARATECH Speed 2000 (serial number ISP1501699) was fatally injured during a jump near Börgönd Airport (LHBD), outside the designated work area. The parachutist, described as highly experienced, was participating in a planned formation jump with 12 other skydivers from an altitude of 4,000 meters.
Sequence of Events
After the group separated, at approximately 750 meters, the parachutist's main parachute opened abnormally, causing a right-hand spiral. The parachutist then cut away the main parachute and deployed the reserve parachute. The reserve deployment resulted in a left-hand spiral that the parachutist could not correct. The parachutist struck the ground at high speed, sustaining fatal injuries. The aircraft (the parachute system) was not damaged.
Investigation and Cause
The Hungarian Transportation Safety Bureau (KBSZ) conducted a safety investigation. The investigation determined that the probable cause of the accident was the parachutist's improper body position during reserve parachute deployment. Additionally, several contributing factors were identified, though not specified in the report. The board did not issue any safety recommendations.
