What happened
A cargo flight departed Rio de Janeiro-Santos Dumont Airport at 14:40 local time, destined for Monte Carlos with scheduled stops in Juiz de Fora and Belo Horizonte. The aircraft was transporting a cargo of banknotes along with two passengers and two pilots. During the flight, the aircraft's total weight exceeded the maximum landing weight by 946 kilograms.
Upon arrival at the destination, the aircraft touched down on the wet surface of runway 21. Following the landing, the spoilers failed to deploy, preventing the crew from decelerating effectively. Due to the excessive weight and the lack of aerodynamic braking, the aircraft could not stop within the available runway length. The plane overran the runway, descended into a 20-meter ravine, and subsequently caught fire. The accident resulted in two fatalities and two injuries. The aircraft was completely destroyed in the wreckage.
Findings
Investigations into the accident highlighted significant errors in flight preparation and operational oversight. The crew did not follow established procedures for flight planning, which led to the aircraft departing Santos Dumont with a weight 711 kilograms above the permitted limit. Furthermore, inadequate landing calculations meant the crew was unaware that the aircraft's weight exceeded the maximum allowable landing weight upon arrival at Monte Carlos.
