What happened
On a flight originating from Texas, a Learjet 25D was operating with a cargo load that included six drums of fuel. While traversing the airspace near Campeche, the aircraft descended to a very low altitude, potentially in an effort to perform a landing. During this low-altitude phase, the plane struck the ground and caught fire in an open field situated approximately 40 km south of Champotón.
All two people on board, consisting of the crew, were killed in the impact. Local reports from a newspaper in Campeche noted the presence of the fuel drums on board at the time of the accident. There were suspicions regarding the legality of the flight operations following the crash.
