What happened
While performing a flight from Veracruz to Nogales, the crew encountered a fire in the left engine. Approximately 112 km from their intended destination, the flight crew declared an emergency, prompting air traffic control to authorize a diversion to Magdalena de Kino Airport.
Upon arrival at the diversion airfield, the aircraft landed significantly further down the 1,386-metre runway than intended. Due to the limited remaining runway length, the crew was unable to bring the aircraft to a halt before the end of the pavement. The aircraft exited the runway and traveled several dozen metres beyond the threshold, where it subsequently caught fire.
All four occupants successfully evacuated the aircraft without injury, though the aircraft was destroyed by the resulting flames.
Findings
- The primary factor in the runway excursion was the landing position being too far down the runway following an engine fire emergency.
