What happened
A charter flight operating from Milan to Genoa crashed into the sea approximately 8 km before reaching the runway at Genoa-Cristoforo Colombo Airport. The flight was carrying a crew of two pilots and one passenger at the time of the accident. During the initial approach, the flight crew encountered adverse weather characterized by rainfall and low cloud cover. Because visibility was inadequate, the crew performed a go-around procedure.
While attempting a second approach to the airport, the aircraft descended below the required altitude and struck the water. The impact resulted in the total destruction of the aircraft. There were three fatalities among the occupants, with no survivors reported.
Findings
- The flight crew encountered insufficient visibility due to heavy rain and low clouds.
- The aircraft was performing a second landing attempt following an initial go-around.
- The descent profile of the aircraft became too low during the second approach, leading to the impact with the sea.
