Aircraft accident at Guatemala City-La Aurora Airport

8 fatalities • Guatemala City-La Aurora, Guatemala • Takeoff (climb)

A twin-engine aircraft crashed near the runway at Guatemala City-La Aurora Airport shortly after takeoff, resulting in multiple fatalities.

What happened

During the initial climb phase following departure from runway 01 at Guatemala City-La Aurora Airport, a twin engine aircraft experienced a significant loss of control. While the aircraft had reached an altitude of approximately 200 feet, it began to exhibit lateral oscillations, rolling left and right. This instability led to an aerodynamic stall, causing the plane to descend and impact the ground roughly 550 metres from the end of the runway.

The impact resulted in the total destruction of the airframe. Among the occupants on board, there were eight fatalities, which included the captain. The remaining crew member, the copilot, and four passengers survived the accident, though the copilot and all four passengers sustained injuries during the crash.

Probable cause

The aircraft entered an aerodynamic stall following lateral oscillations during the initial climb phase.
