Runway excursion involving twin-engine aircraft during takeoff

No fatalities • Kichwa Tembo, Kenya • Takeoff (climb)

A twin-engine aircraft failed to stop during its takeoff roll, resulting in a runway overrun and collision with an obstacle.

What happened

While performing the takeoff roll on runway 08, the crew identified irregular engine parameters on the right-hand engine, suggesting a potential malfunction. Upon verification of the engine issue, the captain initiated an aborted takeoff procedure.

Despite the rejection of the takeoff, the twin-engine aircraft was unable to decelerate sufficiently to remain on the paved surface. The aircraft overran the end of the runway and struck a termite mound. The sequence of events concluded when the plane came to a halt approximately 140 metres beyond the runway boundary.

There were no injuries reported among the 13 occupants on board. However, the aircraft sustained damage that rendered it a total loss.

Findings

  • The primary factor in the excursion was the inability to stop the aircraft within the remaining runway length following the engine anomaly.

Probable cause

The aircraft failed to stop within the runway limits after the pilot rejected the takeoff due to engine irregularities.
