Aircraft overrun during takeoff at Kichwa Tembo

No fatalities • Kichwa Tembo, Kenya • Takeoff (climb)

A twin-engine aircraft experienced a runway excursion during takeoff from Kichwa Tembo, resulting in significant damage but no injuries.

What happened

On the day of the incident, a twin-engine aircraft was performing a flight from Kichel Tembo with a planned stop in Musiara to collect 15 more passengers. At the time of departure, the flight was carrying two pilots and four passengers.

As the aircraft began its takeoff roll on runway 08, it encountered an uneven surface, striking a bump midway down the runway which caused the plane to bounce. A subsequent impact with another bump occurred shortly thereafter. Upon hearing the stall warning, the pilot initiated a rejected takeoff. However, the aircraft could not be brought to a halt within the runway limits. The plane overran the end of the runway, resulting in the loss of the nose landing gear. The aircraft eventually came to a stop approximately 300 metres beyond the runway threshold.

Findings

  • The aircraft sustained damage that rendered it a total loss.
  • All six occupants managed to exit the aircraft without any injuries.
  • The primary factor in the excursion was the impact with bumps on the runway surface during the takeoff roll.

Probable cause

The aircraft overran the runway after encountering uneven pavement during the takeoff roll, leading to a rejected takeoff attempt that could not be completed within the remaining runway length.
