What happened
On May 18, 1996, an L-410 operated by Archana Airways was performing a scheduled service from Delhi to the Kanpur civil aerodrome. The flight departed Delhi carrying a total of 19 people, which included the flight crew and 16 passengers. The initial portion of the flight from Delhi proceeded without incident.
Upon arrival at Kanpur, the aircraft attempted to land on the available runway. During the landing sequence, the aircraft touched down too far down the runway, which prevented the crew from being able to decelerate the plane within the remaining runway distance. As a result, the aircraft exited the runway boundaries and collided with the airport's perimeter wall before coming to a complete stop.
While the impact caused major damage to the VT-ETB, there was no post-crash fire. All 19 occupants of the aircraft survived the event with zero injuries reported.
Findings
- The primary factor in the excursion was a late touchdown on the runway.
- The aircraft failed to stop within the runway limits due to the late touchdown point.
