What happened
During the takeoff phase of the flight, the aircraft completed a standard takeoff roll and the pilot-in-command initiated rotation. As the aircraft reached an altitude of approximately 100 feet while traveling at a speed of 122 knots, the number four engine entered the Beta range, resulting in a sudden loss of power.
In an attempt to stabilize the aircraft, the crew tried to regain control; however, the plane experienced a right-hand roll. This maneuver caused the right wing to make contact with the grass bordering runway 13. Following the impact with the ground, the aircraft became uncontrollable and descended into Kowloon Bay, eventually settling 500 meters away from the shoreline.
Findings
- The incident was triggered when the number four engine transitioned into the Beta range and lost power during the climb.
