What happened
During a joint maritime survey operation, two US Navy aircraft were conducting a mission over the Pacific Ocean. One of the aircraft, a P-3 Orion with registration 158 8930, was flying alongside a second USN aircraft. The flight was operating at an altitude of 3,000 feet amidst marginal weather conditions.
While maintaining their course, the two aircraft collided in mid-air. The impact caused both planes to crash into the ocean. Following the incident, search efforts located small amounts of debris floating on the surface of the water, approximately 60 miles southwest of San Diego.
All 27 personnel on board both aircraft were reported missing following the crash. Despite search operations, no survivors were found, and the crew members were never recovered.
