What happened
During a combat mission targeting multiple enemy vessels operating out of Chinnampo, North Korea, the aircraft sustained significant damage. While engaged in the aerial attack, the plane was struck by 20 mm anti-aircraft fire. This impact resulted in an engine fire affecting the right engine.
In response to the fire and damage, the pilot initiated an egress from the combat zone, directing the aircraft westward toward the Yellow Sea. The flight concluded with an emergency landing approximately 10 km away from Paeng Nylong-do. Although the aircraft was destroyed during the incident, all nine crew members survived the event. Following the ditching, the survivors were recovered by personnel from the Royal Navy vessel HMS Kenya.
Findings
The primary factor leading to the emergency landing was the impact of enemy anti-aircraft fire, which caused an engine fire and necessitated the immediate departure from the mission area.
