What happened
On January 27, 2020, Caspian Airlines flight 6936, an MD83 with registration EP-CPZ, was operating an IFR flight from Mehrabad International Airport. After climbing to a cruising altitude of FL320, the aircraft was directed by air traffic control to fly a direct route to the GODMO waypoint to accommodate other departing traffic.
During the descent phase, the crew coordinated with Mahshahr AFISO, requesting a change in approach to utilize runway 13. The aircraft proceeded with a VOR/DME approach and received landing clearance. At 04:06 UTC, the aircraft touched down on runway 13 at Mahshahr Airport in Khuzestan province. After traveling approximately two-thirds of the runway length, the aircraft ran off the end of the runway.
The impact of the overrun caused the nose and main landing gear struts to break, which brought the cabin floor very close to the grass surface. Although the main door was opened for an emergency evacuation, the emergency slides failed to deploy automatically. Despite the mechanical issues, the crew successfully evacuated all 136 passengers and 8 crew members from the aircraft without any reported fatalities.
