What happened
During the final approach to a lake situated within the Sioux Lookout area, an aircraft encountered heavy snowfall and significant wind gusts. As the plane transitioned through the final segment of its descent, powerful winds impacted the airframe, resulting in the left wing tip making contact with the water.
In an effort to recover from the impact and perform a go-around maneuver, the pilot applied additional engine power. However, the aircraft failed to maintain altitude and instead plunged into the lake in a nose-first orientation. The impact resulted in two fatalities and left two survivors with injuries.
Findings
Investigations into the accident determined that the primary factor was the loss of control during the final approach phase, which was directly triggered by strong winds.
