What happened
On the date of the accident, a single-engine aircraft departed from runway 19 at Albany International Airport. The flight was being operated as a ferry mission with a destination of Montreal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport. Shortly after the takeoff phase, the pilot contacted air traffic control to report mechanical issues involving the engine.
During the initial climb, the aircraft reached an altitude of approximately 800 feet before beginning a left-hand descending turn. While the aircraft briefly regained some altitude, it subsequently entered an uncontrolled descent. The plane impacted a residential area, where the impact resulted in a post-crash fire that consumed the airframe. There was one fatality involving the pilot, who was the only person on board the aircraft.
Findings
- The aircraft experienced engine trouble during the climb portion of the flight.
- The descent became uncontrolled following the mechanical failure.
