Agricultural aircraft crash during takeoff

No fatalities • Yaroslavy, Russia • Takeoff (climb)

An agricultural aircraft crashed and caught fire after failing to rotate during takeoff, resulting in serious injuries to both crew members.

What happened

Following the successful completion of 15 spraying missions, the crew prepared for a subsequent flight. The aircraft was loaded with 1,200 kg of chemical payload before the takeoff sequence commenced from the center of an 850-meter runway. During the procedure, the flaps were set to a 20° position.

As the aircraft reached a velocity between 90 and 100 km/h, the crew attempted to rotate the plane, but the aircraft failed to respond to control inputs. This lack of response caused the plane to overshoot the runway end. Approximately 572 meters beyond the runway, the aircraft collided with an embankment, which triggered a post-crash fire. The impact resulted in the destruction of the aircraft and left both pilots with serious injuries.

Findings

  • The aircraft was operating with a heavy chemical load of 1,200 kg.
  • The primary issue occurred during the rotation phase, where the aircraft did not react to the pilot's commands.

Probable cause

The aircraft failed to respond to rotation inputs during the takeoff roll, leading to a runway overrun and subsequent collision with an embankment.
