What happened
During a nighttime approach into the Laredo region, an aircraft encountered challenging meteorological conditions characterized by haze, low cloud ceilings, and restricted visibility. While performing several turns during the descent, the aircraft entered an uncontrolled dive. The subsequent impact resulted in the total destruction of the airframe. There were seven fatalities among the occupants of the plane.
Findings
The investigation into the crash identified several environmental and operational factors. The flight was conducted under Visual Flight Rules (VFR) during a period when such flight was not advised due to the presence of dark night conditions, haze, and low ceilings. During the final 11 minutes of the flight, the aircraft's heading underwent a significant change of 630 degrees.
Key contributing elements included:
- Spatial disorientation of the pilot
- Loss of situational awareness/becoming lost
- Adverse weather conditions including low visibility and haze
- The decision to operate under VFR in unsuitable weather
