What happened
On 21 January 2001, at approximately 11:45Z, a Beech Bonanza B36, registered as ZS-NUD, was performing circuit practice maneuvers at Lanseria (FALA). During the second circuit of the flight, the aircraft's right-hand main landing gear collapsed as the pilot was attempting to land. The impact caused substantial damage to the airframe. At the time of the incident, the weather conditions were reported as fine, and the flight was being conducted as a private operation.
The investigation
An examination of the circumstances revealed that the pilot held a valid commercial license with the appropriate type rating for the aircraft. Maintenance records indicated that the aircraft had been properly maintained according to regulations. Prior to the landing gear failure, the pilot noted that the cockpit instrumentation provided a green light indication for all three wheels, suggesting the gear was properly extended and locked. No on-site investigation was conducted following the event.
Findings
- The primary event was the collapse of the right-hand main landing gear during the landing phase.
- The aircraft sustained significant structural damage due to the gear failure.
- Meteorological conditions were favorable and did not contribute to the incident.
- The mechanical status of the gear was indicated as correct by the pilot immediately preceding the collapse.
