What happened
On 21 August 2004, a Socata TB20 Trinidad, registration G-TYNE, was conducting a private flight when it experienced an incident during landing at Fife Airfield, Scotland. While performing a normal approach to the asphalt Runway 25, the aircraft made contact with the ground on its nosewheel first. This initial impact led to a series of bounces across the runway surface. During one of these subsequent bounces, the propeller made contact with the ground, resulting in a propeller strike.
There were two people on board the aircraft, including the pilot, and no injuries were reported following the event.
The investigation
Investigators examined the circumstances surrounding the touchdown and the pilot's approach profile. The pilot noted that a higher than normal rate of descent had developed during the final approach phase. This increased descent rate could not be corrected prior to the aircraft making contact with the runway.
At the time of the incident, the Popular Flying Association was conducting a spot landing competition at the airfield. However, the pilot confirmed that he was not a participant in the competition and was not distracted by the additional runway markers present for the event.
