What happened
A private flight departing from Springbok aerodrome encountered rapidly worsening weather conditions while en route to Thuru Lodge. Although the pilot had reviewed a METAR report before takeoff, the flight encountered significant wind increases during the journey. Upon reaching the intended destination, the pilot determined that the wind speed, exceeding 30 kt, made landing on the active runway unsafe for the Cessna 182M.
Seeking a safer alternative, the pilot diverted to Groblershoop; however, the surface winds at that airfield were even more severe. Searching for a calmer area, the pilot identified a section of the N10 national road where the wind direction and speed appeared more manageable. The pilot initiated precautionary landing procedures and approached the asphalt roadway. During the landing sequence, the aircraft struck a road traffic sign (chevron), causing damage to the right-hand horizontal stabiliser. The pilot and passenger evacuated the aircraft immediately and moved it clear of the traffic lanes without sustaining any injuries.
The investigation
The SACAA AIID investigation focused on the pilot's decision-making and the meteorological factors involved. Investigators confirmed the pilot was appropriately licensed and that the aircraft was well-maintained and mechanically sound at the time of the incident. The investigation examined the pilot's weather briefing, noting that while a METAR was obtained, a Terminal Aerodrome Forecast (TAF) was not, which prevented the pilot from anticipating the incoming weather deterioration.
