What happened
On August 17, 2014, at approximately 12:30 local time, a taxiing collision occurred at the Bressaucourt Aerodrome (LSZQ). A Cessna 172S, registration HB-CZO, was maneuvering on the tarmac under Visual Flight Rules (VFR) for private use. During the taxi phase, the aircraft entered a taxiway located between a fuel column and a stationary Piper PA-24-260, registration HB-PNZ. As the Cessna 172S proceeded, its right wingtip struck the vertical stabilizer of the parked Piper PA-24-260. The pilot of the moving aircraft remained uninjured during the incident.
The investigation
Investigators examined the sequence of events on the airfield, noting that an airfield staff member wearing a high-visibility vest was present on the tarmac at the time to coordinate movements within the parking area. The investigation focused on the path taken by the aircraft and the communication or signaling present during the maneuver.
Findings
- The collision was caused by a misunderstanding regarding ground movement coordination.
- The right wing of HB-CZO sustained paint transfer from the vertical stabilizer of HB-PNZ.
- The stationary Piper PA-24-260 sustained structural deformation to its vertical stabilizer.
