What happened
On May 18, 2023, at approximately 15:55 local time, an Airbus A320-214, registration HB-JZY, operated by EasyJet Switzerland SA, departed from Geneva Airport (LSGG) bound for Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (EHAM). Shortly after takeoff, a fire ignited within an overhead luggage compartment. The source of the combustion was identified as a battery from an electronic cigarette.
Following the outbreak of the fire, the flight crew declared an emergency and initiated an immediate return to Geneva. The aircraft landed safely at its point of origin.
The investigation
The Swiss Transportation Safety Investigation Board (SUST) opened an inquiry into the incident to determine the circumstances surrounding the fire. The investigation focused on the behavior of the lithium-ion battery within the overhead bin and the subsequent spread of the fire during the flight.
Findings
- The primary cause of the fire was the ignition of an electronic cigarette battery located in the upper stowage area.
- The incident resulted in 13 light injuries, comprising 4 cabin crew members and 9 passengers.
- The Airbus A320-214 sustained minor damage as a result of the fire.
- There were no injuries to persons on the ground and no damage to airport infrastructure.
