What happened
On a flight operating out of Kalachevo Airport, located approximately 24 km south of Chelyabinsk, a single-engine aircraft was performing routine skydiving missions. During the initial climb phase, while the plane had reached an altitude of roughly 100 meters, it experienced a stall. The aircraft subsequently crashed into a field covered in snow, situated about 1.5 km north of the airport runway.
The impact resulted in the total destruction of the single-engine aircraft. There were no survivors among the 8 fatalities recorded during the incident.
Findings
Investigations into the crash identified several contributing elements that led to the loss of control. The primary cause was a stall occurring during the climb, which was driven by multiple operational failures:
- The crew failed to adhere to established climb procedures regarding airspeed.
- The aircraft's performance capabilities were insufficient because it was being utilized for skydiving operations despite not being configured for that specific mission profile.
- The aircraft was operating at a total weight that exceeded its maximum takeoff weight (MTOW).
- There was an absence of an onboard warning system to alert the pilot to an impending stall.
- The stall occurred at such a low altitude that the pilot had no opportunity to execute recovery maneuvers.
