What happened
On February 27, 2025, an S2R aircraft, registration TG-SPR, was performing agricultural spraying operations at the Palo Blanco Aerodrome, located within Finca Primavera in the municipality of Tiquisate, Escuintla. During the landing phase, the aircraft experienced a runway excursion. Evidence from rubber marks left on the runway indicated that the pilot applied heavy braking on the left side of the aircraft. Investigation of the propeller blades suggested that the engine power had been reduced prior to the impact. The pilot was uninjured during the event.
The investigation
The DGAC/UIA investigation examined the aircraft's maintenance history, the pilot's credentials, and the environmental conditions at the time of the accident. The aircraft had recently undergone maintenance on its braking system, including the replacement of brake pads, discs, and tires. The investigation also reviewed the meteorological conditions, noting that the afternoon climate in the region is characterized by high temperatures, which can generate convective turbulence and haze, complicating VFR operations. Furthermore, the investigators analyzed the pilot's flight schedule, noting that the pilot had completed eight flight segments earlier that morning.
Findings
- The aircraft was airworthy, with all maintenance and agricultural certifications in compliance with DGAC regulations.
- The pilot held the appropriate licenses and certificates for agricultural flight operations.
- High ambient temperatures and convective turbulence in the region likely contributed to challenging flying conditions.
- Spatial disorientation may have caused the pilot to misjudge the remaining runway length required for a safe landing.
- Potential pilot fatigue from the preceding morning flight operations may have contributed to a loss of situational awareness and slower reaction times.
