Landing gear failure during approach to Lima

No fatalities • Lima-Callao-Jorge Chávez, Peru • Landing (descent or approach)

An aircraft experienced a tire burst following takeoff from Cuzco, leading to a landing gear malfunction and subsequent runway excursion at Lima.

What happened

Following departure from the Cuzco-Alejandro Velasco Astete airport, the aircraft experienced a failure involving a tire on the left main landing gear. Despite the mechanical issue, the crew elected to proceed with the flight to Lima.

During the approach phase at the destination, the crew encountered a secondary malfunction where the left main landing gear failed to extend and remained retracted within the wheel well. When the aircraft touched down, the lack of support on the left side caused the plane to tilt and sink toward the left. The aircraft subsequently slid for several dozen meters along the runway before the motion ceased.

Findings

All 73 occupants on board were successfully evacuated from the aircraft type without injury. While there were no fatalities, the aircraft sustained damage that rendered it a total loss.

Probable cause

A tire burst during takeoff led to a subsequent failure of the left main landing gear to extend during approach.
