Aircraft accident at Osh Airport involving heavy landing and fire

No fatalities • Osh, Kyrgyzstan • Landing (descent or approach)

An aircraft performing a descent into Osh Airport experienced a heavy landing in foggy conditions, resulting in a runway excursion and subsequent fire.

What happened

During a flight originating from Bishkek, the crew initiated their descent toward Osh Airport. The approach was conducted under conditions of significantly reduced visibility, characterized by heavy fog with horizontal visibility at 300 metres and vertical visibility at 200 metres. During the landing phase on runway 12, the aircraft was not correctly aligned with the runway centerline.

Upon touchdown, the aircraft experienced a high-impact landing. The force of the impact, measured at 2.5 g, caused the failure of the right main landing gear. Following the structural failure, the aircraft lost directional control and veered off the runway surface. The aircraft eventually came to a stop in an overturned position, at which point a fire broke out. The intensity of the flames resulted in the partial destruction of the airframe.

All 88 occupants were successfully evacuated from the wreckage. Among the passengers and crew, 31 individuals sustained injuries, with several of these injuries classified as serious.

Findings

  • The landing was performed in visibility conditions that were below the reported RVR of 550 metres for runway 12.
  • The primary cause of the gear failure was excessive aerodynamic forces resulting from a hard landing.

Probable cause

The aircraft suffered a landing gear failure due to high-impact forces during an improperly aligned approach in low-visibility conditions.
