What happened
During an approach to Smolensk Airport under adverse weather conditions, the crew of the Tu-154 attempted to land multiple times. After three unsuccessful go-around maneuvers, a fourth approach was initiated. While traveling at a speed of 260 km/h, the aircraft descended below the minimum safe altitude and struck treetops. The impact caused the loss of the left wing, leading to a massive explosion and the subsequent destruction of the aircraft.
All 96 individuals on board perished in the accident. The flight was transporting a high-level Polish delegation to Smolensk to attend the 70th-anniversary commemoration of the Katyn massacre. The passengers included the President of the Polish Republic, his wife, and several prominent members of the Polish government and military, including officials from the Senate, the central bank, and various branches of the armed forces.
Findings
Investigation of the flight sequence indicates that the aircraft descended below the minimum safe altitude during the final approach attempt, which led to the collision with obstacles.
