Aircraft overrun during takeoff in Sumy Oblast

No fatalities • Knyazhichi, Ukraine • Takeoff (climb)

A single-engine aircraft failed to lift off during a spraying mission in Ukraine, resulting in an overrun and an overturned fuselage.

What happened

During an agricultural spraying operation in the Knyavzhichi area of Sumy Oblast, Ukraine, a single-engine aircraft experienced a runway excursion. The crew was preparing for their 16th flight of the day after completing 15 previous successful missions.

As the aircraft began its takeoff roll on a 768-meter runway, it traveled approximately 577 meters before the engine failed to provide sufficient lift to achieve flight. An attempt to abort the takeoff was initiated, but the aircraft could not be stopped within the remaining runway distance. The plane exited the paved surface and entered a muddy field, where it traveled an additional 56 meters before the aircraft overturned.

Findings

  • The single-engine aircraft was unable to become airborne during the takeoff phase.
  • The two occupants of the aircraft managed to exit the wreckage without any injuries.
  • The primary cause of the accident was the failure of the aircraft to gain sufficient altitude before the end of the runway.

Probable cause

The aircraft failed to achieve lift during the takeoff roll, leading to a runway overrun and subsequent rollover in a muddy field.
