What happened
On February 21, 2008, at approximately 12:00 UTC, a motor glider, an L 13 SE Vivat, registration OK-9113, was performing circuit training at Holešov Airport (LKHO). During the final approach to runway 11, the pilot failed to complete essential pre-landing checks, specifically neglecting to verify that the landing gear was extended. As a result, the aircraft landed with the gear retracted.
The impact of the landing caused significant damage to the aircraft, including the destruction of the propeller and damage to the landing gear bay covers. The pilot was uninjured during the incident.
The investigation
The ÚZPLN investigation established that the pilot was fully qualified and medically fit for flight, holding a TMG rating and valid radio licenses. The aircraft, which had a total airframe time of 1,283 hours, was also found to be airworthy and properly maintained. Meteorological conditions at the time—characterized by a 170-degree wind at 8 knots and 5 km visibility in haze—and the state of the airfield were determined to have no influence on the event. Additionally, a breathalyzer test conducted by the police confirmed the pilot was not under the influence of alcohol.
Findings
- The primary cause of the incident was the failure to perform a critical checklist item, specifically the failure to verify the extension of the main landing gear prior to touchdown.
- The pilot failed to follow established procedures for the final approach phase.
- All other operational factors, including weather and aircraft maintenance, were found to be in compliance with regulations.
