Wildlife strike during landing at Karlovy Vary

Casualties unknown • LKKV, CZ

A Mitsubishi MU2 aircraft struck a deer during its landing approach at Karlovy Vary Airport, resulting in damage to the fuselage and landing gear.

What happened

On February 25, 2007, at 18:30 UTC, a Mitsubishi MU2, registration OK-HLB, operated by AEROTAXI s.r.o., was performing an IFR approach for landing on runway 29 at Karlovy Vary Airport (LKKV). The flight originated from Karlovy Vary (LKKB) and was operating without passengers. The weather conditions were night with moonlight, and visibility was sufficient for the operation.

During the final approach, at an altitude of approximately 1.5 meters and with reduced engine power, the first officer observed three deer crossing the runway. The pilot in command subsequently observed the animals. During the landing roll, the lower part of the aircraft's fuselage struck a second deer. The aircraft completed the landing without further incident.

Following the landing, a post-flight inspection revealed traces of blood and fur on the underside of the fuselage and the left landing gear fairing. Debris from the deceased animal was located on runway 29, approximately 200 to 300 meters from the point of impact. Due to the damage, the return flight to LKKB was conducted with the landing gear in the extended position.

The investigation

The ÚZPLN investigation established that the crew was fully qualified and the aircraft held valid airworthiness certification and insurance. The investigation noted that Karlovy Vary Airport had implemented several measures to prevent wildlife incursions, including perimeter fencing (which underwent daily inspections), the removal of forest vegetation near the airfield, and the use of chemical repellents. The investigation also noted the use of service dogs for training in the area as a deterrent.

Findings

  • The wildlife strike occurred despite the various active measures implemented by the airport operator to mitigate the risk of animal incursions.
  • The crew was unable to avoid the collision once the animal entered the aircraft's path.
  • The impact caused damage to the lower fuselage and the main landing gear fairing.

Probable cause

The collision was caused by a deer crossing the runway during the final moments of the landing approach, an event that occurred despite existing airport wildlife mitigation strategies.
