What happened
On October 27, 2019, a Maule M-5-210C, registration N775RG, was performing glider towing operations at Mikulovice Aerodrome (LKMI) as part of a local aero-tow event. After completing several successful flights, the pilot attempted to land on runway 23.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft was struck by a powerful wind gust, likely originating from the right side due to turbulence related to mountain wave activity. This gust caused the aircraft to veer sharply to the left, deviating from the runway centerline by approximately 80 degrees. The pilot attempted to correct the deviation using ailerons, rudder, and a slight increase in power, but was unable to maintain directional control. During the excursion, the left wingtip made contact with the ground. The aircraft briefly lifted off the surface before losing lift and impacting the ground on its right wing and nose, coming to rest in a field approximately 100 meters left of the runway.
The investigation
The ÚZPLadamente investigation examined the aircraft, the pilot's qualifications, and the meteorological conditions at the time of the accident. The investigation reviewed the pilot's flight logs, which showed significant experience on the type, and confirmed the aircraft was airworthy and had recently undergone maintenance.
Meteorological analysis indicated that while the wind was generally from the 220-230 degree direction at 6 to 8 m/s, gusts reached 11 to 12 m/s. The investigation considered the presence of mountain wave turbulence caused by the Hrubý Jeseník mountains, which could have produced unexpected rotors or intense gusts near the aerodrome.
Findings
- The pilot was qualified and the aircraft was in an airworthy condition.
- The aircraft was likely struck by an unexpected intense crosswind gust during the landing phase.
- The pilot lost control of the aircraft while attempting to counteract the sudden deviation.
- The aircraft sustained substantial damage, rendering it a total loss.
- The pilot sustained injuries during the accident.
