Runway excursion involving aircraft at unknown location

No fatalities • Akyab, Myanmar • Landing (descent or approach)

An aircraft overran the runway after touching down approximately 450 meters past the threshold, resulting in significant damage but no injuries.

What happened

During the landing phase of the flight, the aircraft touched down significantly beyond the intended area, approximately 450 meters past the runway threshold. Due to this late touchdown, the crew was unable to decelerate the plane within the remaining length of the pavement. The aircraft subsequently exited the runway surface and continued moving until it came to a halt several dozen meters beyond the end of the runway.

While the aircraft sustained damage that rendered it a total loss, there were no casualties reported. All 43 occupants managed to evacuate the plane without sustaining any injuries.

Findings

  • The primary factor in the excursion was the late touchdown position relative to the runway threshold.

Probable cause

The aircraft touched down too far down the runway, leaving insufficient distance to stop before the end of the pavement.
