Aircraft ground excursion following hard landing

No fatalities • Vijayawada, India • Landing (descent or approach)

A four-engine airplane experienced a series of bounces and nose gear failure during landing, resulting in an excursion from the runway.

What happened

During the landing phase of the flight, the four-engine airplane experienced a heavy touchdown on the runway. This initial impact led to a sequence of three subsequent bounces. Following these oscillations, the nose landing gear failed and collapsed.

As a result of the gear collapse, the aircraft became uncontrollable and veered toward the right side of the runway. The plane eventually came to a halt after departing the paved surface. Despite the severity of the excursion, all 29 occupants were able to evacuate the aircraft without sustaining any injuries. The impact and subsequent movement resulted in the aircraft being declared a total loss, as it was damaged beyond repair.

Findings

  • The sequence of events began with a hard landing.
  • The structural failure of the nose gear was a critical factor in the loss of directional control.

Probable cause

The aircraft veered off the runway following a series of bounces and the subsequent collapse of the nose landing gear.
