What happened
On the flight route from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky to Ossora, the crew of flight PTK123 was notified of adverse weather conditions at their intended destination. In response to the deteriorating weather, the flight crew elected to divert the three-engine aircraft to Ust-Kamchatsk Airport. After a period of several hours spent waiting for the weather to clear, the decision was made to return to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.
During the subsequent takeoff attempt at Ust-Kamchatsk, the captain initiated an aborted takeoff. The aircraft was unable to come to a complete stop within the 1,725-meter length of runway 01/19. As a result, the aircraft overran the runway, causing the loss of the right main landing gear. The plane continued to roll for approximately twelve meters before coming to a halt in roughly 50 centimeters of snow.
Findings
There were no fatalities or injuries among the 26 occupants on board. However, the aircraft sustained damage that was determined to be beyond repair. The specific reason for the aborted takeoff remains unidentified.
