The crew was performing a training sortie at Whidbey Island NAS when an engine caught fire in flight. The pilot decided to return but was eventually forced to make an emergency landing in a field. The aircraft belly landed and came to rest, bursting into flames. All five crew members escaped unhurt and the airplane was destroyed. Crew: Lt R. C. Dailey, pilot, Lt(jg) G. W. Cogswell, copilot, J. A. Jackson, Adc T. R. Albritton, Ao2 J. D. Bozarth. Probable cause (official findings): Engine fire.
