The single engine airplane departed Okhotsk on a cargo flight to Severny (Ayan district of the Khabarovsk region), carrying five oil barrels to supply an aerological expedition. En route, the crew encountered strong downdrafts while overflying the Dzhugdzhur Mountain Range.
