The commercial pilot and private-rated copilot on board the low-wing airplane were performing a visual approach to their home airport at the end of an instrument-flight-rules flight. They were instructed by the approach controller to cross the destination airport over midfield and enter the left downwind leg of the traffic pattern for landing on runway 30L.
